GST (Goods and Services Tax) Reutrn – An Overview

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. Under the GST system, there are different types of returns that taxpayers need to file to report their GST liabilities, input tax credits, and other relevant details. Let’s define each type of GST return and provide an overview of the filing process:

GSTR-1: GSTR-1 is the monthly or quarterly return that needs to be filed by registered regular taxpayers. It includes details of all outward supplies of goods and services made by the taxpayer. The return includes information about invoices, debit notes, credit notes, and any other documents related to outward supplies.

GSTR-2A: GSTR-2A is an auto-generated return that is prepared based on the information furnished by the counterparty taxpayers (i.e., suppliers). It provides details of inward supplies of goods and services as per the invoices uploaded by suppliers in their GSTR-1.

GSTR-3B: GSTR-3B is a summary return that needs to be filed by regular taxpayers on a monthly basis. It contains a summary of outward supplies, input tax credit claimed, and tax liability. It serves as a provisional return where taxpayers need to provide self-assessed tax liability and make a payment.

GSTR-4: GSTR-4 is a quarterly return filed by taxpayers who have opted for the Composition Scheme under GST. It includes details of outward supplies, taxes paid, and inward supplies.

GSTR-5: GSTR-5 is a monthly return filed by Non-Resident Foreign Taxpayers (NRIs) who are registered under GST and involved in taxable activities in India. It contains information about the supplies made and received during the tax period.

GSTR-6: GSTR-6 is a monthly return filed by Input Service Distributors (ISDs). ISDs are entities that receive invoices or bills for input services and distribute the input tax credit to other units having the same PAN (Permanent Account Number).

GSTR-7: GSTR-7 is a monthly return filed by taxpayers who are required to deduct tax at source (TDS) under GST. It includes details of TDS deducted, TDS liability, and any adjustments made.

GSTR-8: GSTR-8 is a monthly return filed by e-commerce operators who are required to collect Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on supplies made through their platform. It contains details of supplies made, TCS collected, and any adjustments.

GSTR-9: GSTR-9 is an annual return filed by regular taxpayers, providing a consolidated summary of all outward and inward supplies made during the financial year. It includes details of taxes paid, input tax credits claimed, and other relevant information.

GSTR-9A: GSTR-9A is an annual return filed by taxpayers who have opted for the Composition Scheme under GST. It contains a summary of all quarterly returns filed during the financial year.
